Introduction
The St. Jude Medical cardiac valve prosthesis is a bileaflet, low-profile, central flow device made of pyrolytic carbon.
In Vitro Studies
Simulated radiographic studies determined the optimal tungsten impregnation for radiopacity, and steady-state flow and pulse duplicator studies demonstrated superior hemodynamic performance compared to other available cardiac valve devices.
Design and Materials
The prosthesis consists of an orifice ring, two leaflets, and a sewing cuff, with a design that minimizes handling and ensures rapid response to pressure changes.
Performance
The St. Jude Medical prosthesis showed low transvalvular pressure gradients, acceptable regurgitation, and central flow with minimal turbulence, making it a promising device for cardiac valve replacement.
