microsemi-unidirectional-and-bidirectional-transient-voltage-suppressor-devices-datasheet.pdf

Microsemi presents its series of High Reliability Unidirectional and Bidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor Devices, spanning a wide range of standoff voltages from 6.8 to 400V. Designed for thru-hole mounting, these devices are developed for suppressing voltage transients and are well-suited for high-reliability applications with assembly lot traceability.

Product Features

The devices detailed in this datasheet offer features such as:

  • Wafer fabrication and lot traceability.
  • Capability to suppress transients up to 1500 watts (based on a 10/1000 µs waveform).
  • An array of optional upscreening opportunities designated by various prefixes (MA, MX, or MXL), each representing different levels of screening and conformance inspection based on MIL-PRF-19500 standards. Refer to MicroNote 129 for additional information on these options.
  • For surface mount configurations, alternative packages like MSMC(G)(J)S.0A to SMC(G)(J)170CA are available (other options upon request).
  • These devices are level 1 moisture sensitive with no need for dry packing as per IPC/JEDEC J-STD-020B.
  • Rounded out with RoHS compliance, which can be indicated by adding the “e3” suffix.

Applications and Benefits

The suppressor devices provide benefits across a variety of applications:

  • Protection from switching transients and induced RF.
  • ESD and EFT protection compliant with IEC 61000-4-2 and IEC 61000-4-4 standards, offering a fast response to disturbances.
  • Secondary lightning protection in accordance with IEC 61000-4-5, differentiated by classes (1 to 4), which determines the suppressor’s applicability based on source impedance (42 Ohms, 12 Ohms, and 2 Ohms).

Maximum Ratings

Key performance specifications include:

  • Peak Pulse Power dissipation at 25°C: Capable of 1500 watts at 10/1000 µs.
  • Maximum operating and storage temperature range from -65°C to +150°C.
  • Thermal resistance specifications detailed for junction-to-lead and junction-to-ambient setups.
  • Steady-State Power dissipation: 5 watts at 40°C or 1.52 watts at 25°C, specified for FR4 PC board mounting with defined copper pad and trace dimensions.
  • Forward Surge capability: 200 Amps peak during an 8.3 ms half-sine wave (applicable only to the unidirectional variant).
  • Solder temperature tolerance specified at 260°C for 10 seconds maximum.
