K1/K2 Series Rocker Switches Overview

The K1/K2 series snap-in rockers encompass a range of sealed and illuminated rocker switches tailored for challenging conditions. These switches are well-suited for environments that are wet, dusty, or subject to extreme temperatures, vibrations, shock, and exposure to UV and solvents, making them ideal for marine, appliance, heavy equipment, and industrial control applications.

Design and Features

These switches are durable, boasting industry-standard IP68S and IP69K sealing for outstanding protection against ingress. Optional additional protection with a panel gasket is also available. The K1 series supports single pole configurations, while the K2 series accommodates both single and double pole configurations. Illuminated models present options for incandescent, LED, or neon lighting sources, with red, green, clear, or amber lenses. Furthermore, illumination can function independently, dependently, or in combination with switch positions. Custom color requests and value-added wiring assemblies are also catered for.

Key Characteristics

Withstanding extreme conditions, the switches offer momentary and maintained action in 2 and 3-position types. The snap-in design allows for easy installation, suitable for a variety of panel thicknesses. Custom legends can be crafted upon request, adding an extra layer of customization to meet specific requirements.

In addition to the solid mechanical specifications, these switches are RoHS/WEEE/Reach compliant, UL recognized, and CSA certified. Compatibility with a wide range of panel cutouts makes them versatile for replacement or new installations. Their robust design allows for handling power loads up to 16 amps or 1/2 HP, and they are also capable of logic level electronic switching applications.

Electrical Ratings and Life Expectancy

Electrical ratings for the switches vary, supporting resistive loads of 16A at 25,000 cycles or 10A at 50,000 cycles, among other specifications. Motor loads can reach 0.5HP with 25,000 cycles. Dielectric Voltage Withstand (DWV) is impressive at 1000 Vrms exceot across light terminals. Logic level load tolerances range from 10-100mA at 3-28VDC; however, exceeding these logic level loads voids the rating. The provided ratings chart can be referred to for a detailed breakdown.

The K1/K2 series promises a satisfactory operational lifespan, with a mechanical life expectancy of 100,000 cycles and electrical life depending on the specific load and usage conditions.

Materials and Assembly Information

Structurally, the case, button, and base are made of thermoplastic, ensuring durability. Terminals and contacts consist of brass, silver alloy with either a silver plate or gold flash for logic level applications. Assembly accessories include screws and lockwashers for terminals; specific quick connect terminals are recommended – AMP 60253 for 12-16 AWG and AMP 42100-2 for 14-18 AWG.
