OMAP-L138 C6000 DSP+ARM Processor Overview
The OMAP-L138 C6000 DSP+ARM Processor is a dual-core System-on-Chip (SoC) designed by Texas Instruments, featuring both a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) and an ARM MPU. This processor is ideal for a wide range of applications, boasting a balance of high-performance processing capabilities with power efficiency. Its integration of a 375- or 456-MHz ARM9 RISC MPU with a C674x VLIW DSP allows for complex signal processing tasks to be handled alongside general computing tasks.
The ARM926EJ-S core accommodates both 32- and 16-bit Thumb instructions and DSP instruction extensions, backed by a robust ARM memory architecture including 16KB each of instruction and data caches, alongside 8KB of RAM and 64KB of ROM. The C674x DSP core includes multiple enhancements over previous generations, offering instruction set features such as byte-addressable data, bit-field manipulation, and compact 16-bit instructions for efficient code execution.
Memory and Performance
With a robust instruction set, the processor achieves up to 3648 MIPS and 2746 MFLOPS, characterized by byte-addressable 8-bit to 64-bit data, and overflow protection. The processor’s two-level cache memory architecture includes 32KB of L1P program RAM/cache, 32KB of L1D data RAM/cache, and 256KB of unified L2 mapped RAM/cache.
Data Transfer and Storage
Storage and data transfer capabilities are facilitated by two external memory interfaces for EMIFA NOR and NAND, besides 16-bit SDRAM and DDR2/Mobile DDR memory controllers. Data throughput is substantially boosted with an enhanced DMA controller (EDMA3).
Connectivity and I/O
The OMAP-L138 offers a wealth of connectivity options, such as multiple UART modules with FIFO, oversampling options, SPIs, MMC/SD Card interfaces with secure data I/O, I2C buses, a high-bandwidth HPI, a real-time unit subsystem with two independent cores, and an Ethernet MAC compliant with IEEE 802.3 standards.
Furthermore, it provides extensive support for multimedia applications with components like an audio serial port (McASP), audio interfaces (AC97 and McBSP), and video interfaces (VPIF and uPP). Notably, it also includes a Serial ATA (SATA) controller supporting SATA II, RTC, several general-purpose and enhanced high-resolution timers, as well as eHRPWMs and capture modules for more precise control operations.
Package and Support
The OMAP-L138 is offered in several package options including 361-ball Pb-Free Plastic Ball Grid Array (PBGA) and is available in commercial, extended, or industrial temperature ranges. Along with the hardware features, various software support options are provided, like the TI DSP BIOS, Chip Support Library, and DSP Library, enabling easier software development and optimization for the OMAP-L138 processor.
