The Porsche 928 Noise Test Vehicle
This unique Porsche 928 has been used for over 30 years as an endurance runner and rolling test bench to make cars quieter.
With its many add-on parts, this silver 928 is a peculiar sight, but its purpose is to capture external noise-relevant parameters during a drive to fulfil legal noise emission requirements.
A Quiet Giant
Harald Mann, a trained mechanic, explains that the 928 was chosen for its power in the lower engine speed range, making it an ideal candidate for noise testing.
Engineers wrapped the 928 in cotton wool to isolate and minimize noise sources, and mounted the radiator in front of the bumper to eliminate the roaring fan.
The result is probably the quietest 928 in the world, with a noise level of 63dB (A) achieved during testing.
