Waymo, an autonomous driving technology company, submits this Advice Letter 0002 to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for approval of its updated Passenger Safety Plan (January 2024) and expansion of its DMV Deployment Permit.

Background

Waymo has been providing autonomous vehicle (AV) services to the public in California and Arizona since 2019 and has now expanded its service to San Francisco. The company plans to expand its operations to the Los Angeles area and additional portions of the San Francisco Peninsula.

Passenger Safety Plan Update

The updated Passenger Safety Plan includes updates to reflect Waymo’s deep experience and operational milestones, including the provision of over one million driverless rides to public riders across its California and Arizona passenger carrier service areas. The plan also includes new safety features, such as lighting by puddle lamps to illuminate the ground during passenger pick-up and drop-off.

  • Section I: Our Mission & Section IIL Moving People with Waymo One: Brings up to date the description of Waymo’s now fifteen years of deep experience and operational milestones.
  • Section IV: Rider Education: Updates the summary of how Waymo educates riders about its technology and service before and after Waymo account onboarding.
  • Section VIIL: COVID-19 Response Plan: Changes made in conformance with applicable health and safety guidance.

Waymo has also implemented new safety features, such as the ability for its Remote Assistance team to play audio messages through the Waymo AV’s external speakers to communicate the Waymo AV’s intent to other road users.
