Chevrolet Volt Battery Introduction

The Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle uses a 16kWh lithium-ion battery pack, manufactured by GM, which provides up to 40 miles of driving range. The battery pack consists of more than 200 lithium-ion cells, providing nearly twice the power of a nickel-metal hydride battery in a much smaller package. The battery pack is designed to operate within a state-of-charge window to avoid fully charging or discharging the battery, which can shorten its life.

Battery Recharging

The Chevrolet Volt battery can be recharged using a household-type electrical outlet, taking around 8 hours with a 120V outlet and less than 3 hours with a 240V outlet. The battery is designed to be safe and durable, with numerous measures taken to prevent safety issues such as short-circuiting and overheating.

Future Generations of Batteries

Future generations of batteries for the Chevrolet Volt and other vehicles will likely include design improvements such as better packaging, higher energy density, and more efficient insulation, leading to lower costs and more efficient energy storage.
