Fuse and Relay Overview
The Fiat 124 Spider uses European style ceramic fuses, also known as “bullet fuses”, which are difficult to source due to their age. It’s essential to have spare fuses in case of an emergency. The fuse box is located under the dash on the driver’s left side, and fuse locations vary by year.
Fuse Box Maintenance
Ceramic fuses can age and develop resistance, making them prone to failure. Regularly checking and cleaning the fuse box, as well as replacing fuses over 30 years old, is crucial for maintaining the electrical system.
Relay Background
Relays were introduced in the 124 Spider to handle the increasing electrical demands of modern vehicles. The Bosch micro-relay was designed to handle up to 30 amps and is commonly used in Spider models from 1975 to 1985.
Relay Locations
Relay locations vary by year, but in general, they are found under the hood, dash, or in a drop-down relay tray under the glovebox. It’s essential to know the location of the relays in your Spider to properly diagnose and maintain the electrical system.
